Question 1: How often should I clean my diskette drive and how do I do it? Computer manufacturers' recommend cleaning the read/write heads in the diskette drive every 40 hours of use. This can vary due to operating and environmental conditions. To clean the drive, use a diskette drive head cleaning kit and follow the recommended procedure which is enclosed with the kit. It is a very quick and simple procedure. Head cleaning kits now by Imation™ for all size diskette drives are available from your local reseller or mail order catalog. Question 2: What are the best storage conditions for my diskettes? For 3.5" diskettes, store between 40 degrees Fahrenheit and 127 degrees Fahrenheit. For 5.25" diskettes, store between 40 degrees Fahrenheit and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. In both cases, humidity should not exceed 90%. Question 3: Can I take my diskettes through airport security? The baggage X-ray systems will not harm data stored on a diskette. However, it is not recommended that you carry diskettes through the metal detector system, due to the magnetic field generated by the system. You should either allow them to pass through the baggage X- ray system or have them inspected by hand.
